Is second of 2 articles intended to identify The Beast.
In his letter to the Thessalonians, Paul reveals several Truths: One is that "that day" will not come before the Abomination reveals himself. Believing that "the Day of the Lord" may come when in fact it will not come is what Paul describes as being "troubled."
The other side of that coin is; that once Satan is released, then that day will come soon. Refusing to recognize the signs which reveal that "the day of the Lord" will soon occur is to be both deceived and "troubled." Heb 10:25.
Paul clearly, and in plain words, explains the signs which will reveal that "the day of Christ is at hand." Paul also gives enough description of the son of perdition and his actions that we will be able to recognize him and these events in other end time prophecy.
Following is 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 in three columns, for easy comparison. (FYI, the Good News Bible interpretation is, IMHO, one of the least accurate. You will surely want to compare these to be certain that I have omitted nothing.)
Young's Literal | KJV 1769 | Good News Bible | | 1 And we ask you, 1 Now we beseech 1 Concerning the brethren, in regard you, brethren, by coming of our Lord to the presence of the coming of our Jesus Christ and our Lord Jesus Lord Jesus Christ, our being gathered Christ, and of our and by our together to be with gathering together gathering together him: I beg you, my unto him, unto him, brothers and sisters, | | 2 that ye be not 2 That ye be not 2 not to be so quickly shaken in soon shaken in easily confused in mind, nor be mind, or be your thinking or troubled, neither troubled, neither upset by the claim through spirit, by spirit, nor by that the Day of the neither through word, nor by letter Lord has come. word, neither as from us, as that through letters as the day of Christ Perhaps it is through us, as that is at hand. thought that we the day of Christ said this while hath arrived; prophesying or preaching, or that we wrote it in a letter.
In the first two verses, Paul is adamant that First Century Saints should NOT be concerned that the coming of the Lord is imminent. He reminds them (v 5) that this topic is one he discussed with them when he was with them. He tells them that he will not send them a letter telling them the opposite of what he told them before. He also includes "us" which may be Timothy and Titus, or may include all the Apostils.
| | 3 let not any one 3 Let no man 3 Do not let anyone deceive you in any deceive you by any deceive you in any manner, because-if means: for that day way. For the Day the falling away shall not come, will not come until may not come first, except there come a the final Rebellion and the man of sin falling away first, takes place and the be revealed-the son and that man of sin Wicked One appears, of the destruction, be revealed, the who is destined for and the man of sin son of perdition; hell. be revealed-the son of the destruction,
In the third verse, Paul explains why the First Century Saints should NOT be deceived by any claim that the day of the Lord is at hand. That is, plain and simply, that THAT DAY shall not come until Satan has revealed himself and that event described as "the falling away" has occurred. Both events must occur before the Lord will appear. Jesus described the 'falling away" as "the Affliction." Mat 24:8-14.
| | 4 who is opposing 4 Who opposeth and He will oppose and is raising exalteth himself every so-called god himself up above above all that is or object of all called God or called God, or that worship and put worshipped, so that is worshipped; so himself above them he in the sanctuary that he as God all. He will even of God as God hath sitteth in the go in and sit down sat down, shewing temple of God, in God's Temple and himself off that he shewing himself claim to be God. is God-the day doth that he is God. not come.
In the fourth verse Paul describes in more detail what Satan will do when he exposes himself. This event is also described in Mat 24:14-21, Dan 9:27, 11:36-39, Rev 13:15.
| | 5 Do ye not 5 Remember ye not, 5 Don't you remember that, that, when I was remember? I told being yet with you, yet with you, I you all this while these things I said told you these I was with you. to you? things?
Paul reminds them that he explained these things (vv 1, 2) to them while he was with them.
| | 6 and now, what is 6 And now ye know 6 Yet there is keeping down ye what withholdeth something that have known, for his that he might be keeps this from being revealed in revealed in his happening now, and his own time, time. you know what it is. At the proper time, then, the Wicked One will appear.
Paul reminds them that he has told them why Satan will not appear soon -- that he is being restrained until 'his time.'
| | 7 for the secret of 7 For the mystery 7 The Mysterious the lawlessness of iniquity doth Wickedness is doth already work, already work: only already at work, only he who is he who now letteth but what is going keeping down now will let, until he to happen will not will hinder -till be taken out of the happen until the he may be out of way. one who holds it the way, back is taken out
Satan was "at work" then, since he was cast down to earth after Christ ascended to His throne. Luke 10:18, Rev 12:7-9.
| | 8 and then shall be 8 And then shall of the way. Then revealed the that Wicked be the Wicked One will Lawless One, whom revealed, whom the be revealed, but the Lord shall Lord shall consume when the Lord Jesus consume with the with the spirit of comes, he will kill spirit of his his mouth, and him with the breath mouth, and shall shall destroy with from his mouth and destroy with the the brightness of destroy him with manifestation of his coming: his dazzling his presence, presence.
When the Holy Spirit ("He who letteth") releases Satan, then he will be allowed to expose himself. Rev 20:7-8.

Both Satan and the false Christ, who's "working" -- false signs, lying wonders and signs, will be revealed. Rev 13:5.
| | 10 and in all 10 And with all 10 and use every deceitfulness of deceivableness of kind of wicked the unrighteousness unrighteousness in deceit on those who in those perishing, them that perish; will perish. They because the love of because they will perish because the truth they did received not the they did not not receive for love of the truth, welcome and love their being saved, that they might be the truth so as to saved. the truth so as to be saved.
Satan, (who will proclaim himself to be "God"), and his false Christ, (who will command the entire world to worship the false "God") will deceive all those who do not love Truth.
| | 11 and because of 11 And for this 11 And so God sends this shall God send cause God shall the power of error to them a working send them strong to work in them so of delusion, for delusion, that they that they believe their believing the should believe a what is false. lie, lie:
Because they have no love of Truth they will be deceived by the Lie.

It cannot be made any more clear, apparent or obvious, that the event known as "the falling away" must occur before the coming of the Lord. Mat 24:8-14.
It cannot be made any more clear, or apparent, or obvious, that that one described (vv 3, 4) as "the lawless one," the "son of perdition," and "the man of sin" must be revealed before the coming of the Lord. Rev 13.
Both Matthew and Daniel's account include the term "Abomination" (or 'abominations') and give a "time" when this event will take place. According to Daniel it is the last Seven Years (70th period of Sevens, 9:24) of God's Plan and Purpose for His Creation.
According to Matthew, Jesus gave a sequence: "The Beginning of Sorrows," then "the Affliction," Then "the Great Tribulation" (which is caused by the Abomination.) Mat 24:7-8, 8-14, 14-21.
Aside from the description given by Paul, John gives the most detailed description of this event. Paul includes descriptive terms like: "sit in the temple of God, showing himself that he is 'God.'" (Satan has done this before: see Dan 3:6, etc.)
John writes: "cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed..." Rev 13:5-15.
In both Thessalonians and Revelation we see both Satan and the False Christ described.
Paul wrote: "Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God." This is Satan when he claims to be "God." 2 Thes 2:4, Rev 13:4-7, 15.
John wrote: "And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them." This is Satan, who was locked into the Pit, then released. Rev 20:1-3, 7.
John wrote: "And they worshipped the dragon [Satan] which gave power unto the [modern Rome, v 1-2] beast: and they worshipped the [Satan] beast, saying, Who is like unto the [Satan] beast? who is able to make war with [Satan] him?
5 And there was given unto him [Satan] a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him [Satan] to continue forty and two months. (The last 3 1/2 years of Daniel's 70th week.)
6 And he [Satan] opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him [Satan] to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Paul wrote: "whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders..." This is the False Christ. 2 Thes 2:9, Rev 13:15.
John described the rise of the false Christ: "And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon." Christ is The Lamb: this beast is LIKE a lamb -- that is; this beast is the false Christ. Rev 13:11.
John wrote: "And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 2 Thes 2:9, Rev 13:14.
This sign, "which had the wound by a sword, and did live," reveals that Satan, The Beast, has entered into, or "possessed the body" (as he has done before, John 13:27) of the last ruler of modern Rome -- who was wounded; and actually ruled the World as (in the body of) a man. "And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition." Zec 11:17, Rev 17:11.
Both Paul and John have identified Satan as the Beast who will claim to be "God" and who will be destroyed, and cast into the lake of fire, at and by the coming of the Lord. Rev 19:11-21 and 20:8-15.
Both "The Beast" (Satan, the false 'God' - Rev 13:7-8) and 'the beast' (the false Christ - Rev 13:11-12) are cast into the lake of fire in Chapter Nineteen and Twenty. Dan 9:27, Mat 24:29-31, Rev 14:1-5, 19:19-21, 20:9-15.
Those who love Truth search for it; those who don't, won't.
Those who receive no love of love Truth believe the false prophets.
